 Hazel P. Bryant Shields, Treasurer
After high school, Hazel's education included a Bachelor of Science from Jackson State College in Sociology and Social Welfare in 1970. Participating in the first Teacher Corps Internship Program in M.S., she received an M.S. in Early Childhood Education in 1972 from Jackson State University. In 1989 Mrs. Shields completed requirements for the S.Ed. in School Administration at Mississippi College. Additional knowledge and certifications continued at the University of M.S., MS State University, University of Southern MS, and Millsaps College.
           
Hazel Shields has always worked in areas where the students were at risk. These included: Title I Reading and Math Teacher; Kindergarten Teacher, teaching grades 1,2, and 5; teaching grades 11 and 12 Sociology and the United States History in Frankfurt, West Germany, with the department of Defense European Area; Assistant Principal at Clinton Park Elementary, Clinton Public School District; Assistant Principal at Timberlawn Elementary, Jackson Public School District; and Principal at Brown Elementary School, Jackson Public School District. She also worked as a Title-I School Safety Inspector in Mississippi and Louisiana and served as a guest instructor at Jackson State University in the Department of Teacher Education.
 
Returning to M.S. after a 7-year teaching career in Michigan, Ms. Shields joined the Lanier High School National Alumni Association, where she holds a Silver Life Membership. Some of her contributions to the LHSNAA include working on several committees, including the Academic Committee, which she still chairs, serving as Vice President, President, and current treasurer. Ms. Shields has served Lanier and the community in the following capacities.
  • developed the present look of the Lanier High School license plate, 
  • volunteers for field trips, 
  • redesigned the office forms for the Association;
  • worked on fundraising campaigns, 
  • participated in grant search interviews and grant-writing activities,
  • assisted the Academy Coach at Lanier for two years,
  • helped to re-establish the Lanier PTSA in 2015,
  • attends and participates in most Class Day activities since 2013,
  • advocated for the Chancellor of UMMC to consider reopening the Clinic at Lanier High School in its current format,
  • serves as a member of the Clinic Advisory Board,
  • worked with the District Facilities Office to improve the conditions inside and outside Lanier High School to make it a safe and secure learning environment for students and staff,
  • actively participates in all meetings with the District concerning Lanier High School and the Lanier High School National Alumni Association, where she proudly represents LHS/833.
